Let's see who can refrain the longest from responding to troll posts.

Until 100% of us ignore 100% of troll posts, our self-moderation is a joke.

C'mon people, don't be taunted by trolls. I, too, have been guilty.

On this day I pledge to ignore 100% of troll posts. I will not chime-in to defend another poster. I will not stoop to troll-lows and post a snarky reply. I will not discuss war, peace, politics, religion or even music with those identified as trolls. I solemnly swear.

Let's turn a new leaf. Who's with me?

It's a tactic that's been suggested before - certainly by me on more than one occasion - though such rallying calls are doubtless yet more fuel on the bonfire of the troll's vanity. If anything, we have to refrain from all comment - including ones like yours and mine. I will now disappear in a cloud of self-defeating inconsistency.

I feel your pain. It's an hilarious conundrum.

The man said self-moderate. Although I literally laughed aloud at that request/suggestion, we all know it is indeed the way.

Be the silence.

Yikes! I called for it more than once, and I (I counted!) actually adhered to the "ignore" approach to a far greater extent than ANYONE here ever has (you have to factor in that it was at a time I was posting ~ 1000X as much as any other poster...see what I mean? It was almost by shear chance that I'd reply to a troll!).

Bottom line: it doesn't work.

So, my "yikes" is because as I explained to L, I've turned over a new leaf myself, fig'ing that I might as well try the other approach. So, I am planning on replying as I find it suits me, just for grins. I know this may be very "unPM", nonPC, and in fact, piss everyone else off, but think of it as my re-gifting to the Forum. All my BS all these years, right? I might as well rechannel that drivel into an outlet that engages the dimwit if only out of shear exasperation as to no other approach working.

Rob should really count up how many "ignore the trolls" and "lets keep it civil" posts there have been cause it's way beyond what any sane individual would tolerate before screaming "I give!!!" and simply furgitaboutit.

Ya know? I still love ya, dude, for trying, but I just don't think anything works since I am a "cause and effect" kind of nerd that requires positive feedback or after the 20th time I decide "hmmm, there's a trend here!" and stop trying the approach I was trying...does that make any sense?

And eventually we realise that it's time to stop introducing one forcefully to the other. Your way of dealing with the problem could be as good as any other. So long as you don't set your expectations too high for what you get in response you might well find there's some low amusement to be had. I've been tempted to try it myself, but I reckon my 'ignore' threshold is way higher than yours, Mr Billy Goat Gruff.

I must say I thought twice about it when I finally scanned the big board and saw to my delight that you, L, and a handful, had quite the day with a nice DS thread. Meanwhile, in my bunker, doped up on all sides (ahem, only you will appreciate the variety of means by which this metaphor works for me...grading, posting, and medical issues, not necessarily in that order; but hey, the semester's OVER! Nice to be officially finished, though that's an offsite story no doubt).

Hope this winter day (night) finds you in good spirits!

The DS thread was thread of the day. An interesting read. I read threads involving certain posters. So when YOU started posting in troll threads...there I was....reading a troll thread. You bastard.

I follow the information. I try my best to "read around" the other stuff.

Hey dad (said with great affection), it's only cause you just caught me, and mean JUST, on the day--within minutes really--of posting maybe THREE replies to IS! Seriously.

I was just scared of having been caught red handed, so I quickly came up with my explanation.

Wheww.

Hope I still get some Xmas cookies.

Well, I knew it was you. I can't tell ya what to do...you still get the cookies.

I just figured perhaps we could roll that rock a bit closer to the top this time. Many hands....light work......try and try again.....I'll stop now. You supervise.

OK, you talked me into it.

Besides, can you believe that while I was "giving up", if I'd only looked, here was a great long productive thread on DS...involving my own beloved Rob and Elb?!

Damn--I knew I shudda waited one more day, but I was getting bored, and it seemed my webfriends of the first order were scarce...they were just saving it all up, and I missed getting in on it to boot.

if no one responds to this, then perhaps everyone is with you, they just think you are the troll. Good thing i responded, eh?

All kidding aside, i am with you although i don't talk politics, religion etc with trolls or non-trolls alike so this is an easy one for me. I will admit to responding to the Charlie Miller thank you post only to support what was said. We should thank Charlie regardless of who initiates the thread.
